Expressive Culture Training

For students who are self-motivated and have good time management skills, Ms. Nirmala – SITA Outreach & Operations Manager in Madurai – will help match students to a mentor or teacher in a Tamil expressive cultural form, at no extra cost. This is a unique and invaluable extra-curricular offering, that lasts for the extent of the semester or academic-year program. There are a number of cultural forms that are popular among SITA students. The are pictured here. ¬†Others can be arranged on a case-by-case basis. Studying a cultural form in Madurai can be a great way to try something new, expand one’s existing musical, athletic, or artistic skills in a specifically Tamil form, immerse oneself in Tamil culture, or combine a directed field research project with cultural training.

The SITA program asks students to be committed to this offering if they choose to take advantage of it, out of respect to the teachers and mentors who agree to the semester or academic year lessons. ¬†It is no small task within students’ already busy schedules – but worth the dedication, as the semester-end student performances demonstrate!
